Patrick Bazen, the oldest son of an addiction-riddled family, thinks he is living a responsible life in Portland, Maine when his father finally drinks himself to death. His mother, Moira calls him home to gather the “kids” for the funeral. On his fifty-mile drive to Salt Moon, Maine, Pat doesn’t realize this trip will unravel everything that he believes he is.
Pat begins cleaning out his father’s things and his childhood love, Sunny, and younger brother Max join him at Moira’s lakeside house. After the wake, their family friend Sean arrives, drunk and eager for truth. Soon Pat must face it: another loss they all shared during the “bad summer” of 1998. Will he be able to forgive his hometown for what it took from him, or will he push his grief deeper into the waters of Salt Moon Lake?
Salt Moon is an 65,000-word novel that combines contemporary family narrative with the mysteries of nature in New England. Readers who enjoy Olive Kitteridge and The Midcoast will find a home in Salt Moon.
